Smoke Alarm Compliance
Queensland has the strictest smoke alarm legislation in Australia. Ensuring compliance isn’t just a legal requirement—it saves lives.
The 2022 QLD Government Mandate
From 1 January 2022, all dwellings sold, leased, or where an existing lease is renewed must comply. By 2027, ALL homes must comply.
- Alarms must be installed in every bedroom.
- Alarms must be installed in hallways connecting bedrooms.
- There must be at least one alarm on every level of the home.
Photoelectric vs Ionisation
The mandate requires Photoelectric alarms. Unlike old ionisation alarms (which detect flaming fires), photoelectric alarms “see” smoke particles. They are significantly faster at detecting smoldering fires—the most common type of fatal house fire.
Why Interconnection Matters
Alarms must be interconnected (hardwired or wireless via RF). This means if a fire starts in the kitchen, the alarm in your bedroom will sound instantly, giving you crucial extra seconds to escape.
